One of the world's safest airlines, a reverse-herringbone suite with Rimowa amenity kits, and Taipei — an underrated Asian hub that connects onward across the region. EVA Air's Royal Laurel is a quietly excellent business class that UK travellers routinely overlook.
Quick answer
EVA Air Royal Laurel is a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone suite with direct aisle access on every long-haul seat. There is no closing door, but the shell is high and the seat is comfortable. EVA is a Star Alliance member, so Avios do not work. Two things stand out: a consistently outstanding safety record, and Rimowa amenity kits that passengers actually keep. Expect £2,600–£4,000 return from the UK.
About EVA Air
EVA Air was founded in 1989 as the aviation arm of the Evergreen Group, one of the world's largest shipping conglomerates. It is Taiwan's second flag carrier after China Airlines and operates from Taipei Taoyuan.
Its defining characteristic is safety. EVA has consistently ranked among the world's safest airlines in independent assessments for well over a decade, with a record that few carriers of comparable size can match. For nervous flyers this is not a marketing line — it is the airline's most substantive credential.
EVA joined Star Alliance in 2013, alongside Singapore Airlines, ANA, Lufthansa and United.
The fleet is modern — 777-300ERs, 787-9s and 787-10s, and A330s on regional routes. Product consistency in the long-haul cabin is good.

The Royal Laurel Seat
Royal Laurel uses a reverse-herringbone layout — the same fundamental geometry as Cathay Pacific — where seats angle outward toward the window. Every passenger gets direct aisle access, a window view from the seat, and a natural privacy angle away from the aisle.
Privacy without a door
There is no sliding door. The shell is high and the outward angle means nobody in the aisle looks directly at you, but EVA sits behind Qsuite, BA Club Suite, Delta One Suite and ANA's The Room on enclosed privacy.
The bed
Fully flat at roughly 78 inches, converting electrically. As with all reverse-herringbone designs the footwell sits at an angle and narrows at the ankle — passengers over 6ft 2in report the familiar cramping. Bedding is a mattress topper, duvet and pillow, and is good quality.
Storage
Adequate — a side console with a small enclosed compartment, a literature pocket and power outlets. Comparable to Cathay, behind BA Club Suite and Etihad's Business Studio.
The Rimowa amenity kit
EVA's amenity kit is a genuine differentiator and the detail passengers mention most. Rather than a fabric pouch, Royal Laurel passengers receive a miniature Rimowa hard-shell case — the same grooved aluminium-effect design as the luggage brand. Designs rotate, and collectors actively seek particular editions.
It sounds trivial. In practice it is the single most memorable physical takeaway of any business class in this guide, and it is a large part of why EVA has a devoted following.
Royal Laurel vs Premium Laurel: Know the Difference
EVA uses two business class brand names and the distinction matters.
Royal Laurel is the full long-haul business product — 1-2-1 reverse herringbone, fully flat bed, direct aisle access. This is what you get on London to Taipei.
Premium Laurel is the regional business class on shorter Asian sectors, typically a 2-2-2 or angled layout on A330s. It is a lesser product without guaranteed aisle access.
What this means in practice: your London–Taipei sector will be Royal Laurel, but an onward connection to Bangkok, Manila or Ho Chi Minh City may be Premium Laurel. If the regional leg matters, ask us to check the equipment — the difference is significant.
Which Aircraft Has Royal Laurel
| Aircraft | Product | Layout | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 777-300ER | Royal Laurel | 1-2-1 | Best — widest cabin |
| 787-10 | Royal Laurel | 1-2-1 | Excellent |
| 787-9 | Royal Laurel | 1-2-1 | Excellent |
| A330-300 | Premium Laurel | 2-2-2 / angled | Regional only |
London Heathrow to Taipei is operated by the 777-300ER or 787, both with full Royal Laurel.
Best Seats by Traveller Type
| You are | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, want quiet | Window seat, mid-cabin | Reverse herringbone angles you from the aisle |
| Couple | Centre pair | Divider lowers; no double bed available |
| Tall (over 6ft 2in) | 777-300ER over 787 | Wider cabin, more footwell clearance |
| Working the flight | Window, forward rows | Quieter, console fits a laptop |
| Anyone | Avoid last row before galley | Curtain light and crew noise |
Food and Drink
EVA offers a choice of Chinese and Western menus, and as with most Asian carriers the local option is the stronger one. Taiwanese and Chinese dishes are prepared properly, and the airline has run collaborations with well-regarded Taipei restaurants.
The tea service deserves specific mention. Taiwan produces some of the world's finest oolong, and EVA serves proper loose-leaf Taiwanese teas rather than generic teabags. Ask for the oolong.
Service is a multi-course meal with a light offering before landing. There is no pre-order system as at Singapore and no true dine-on-demand as at Qatar or Etihad.
Champagne is served in Royal Laurel and the wine list is curated and rotates.
Amenities, Sleep and Service
Beyond the Rimowa kit, EVA provides pyjamas in Royal Laurel on long-haul — placing it ahead of BA, Singapore and Cathay, level with Qatar, Emirates, Etihad and Virgin.
Bedding is a mattress topper, duvet and pillow. Good, unremarkable.
Service is polite, precise and understated, closer in style to ANA and Singapore than to the Gulf carriers. Consistency is high. EVA crews are well trained and unfailingly courteous without being intrusive.
Wi-Fi is paid on most aircraft with free tiers appearing on newer configurations — behind Qatar, Singapore, ANA and Delta on connectivity.
Taipei Taoyuan and the EVA Lounges
Taipei Taoyuan is an efficient, modern and pleasantly uncrowded hub. It handles far lower volumes than Hong Kong, Singapore or the Gulf airports, which makes connecting straightforward and low-stress.
EVA operates several lounges at Taoyuan. The Star and The Infinity are the flagship business lounges, offering noodle bars, à la carte service, shower suites and quiet zones. The design is restrained and comfortable.
They are very good without reaching the standard of Cathay's Pier or Qatar's Al Mourjan, but the food is strong and — importantly — they are rarely as busy as their more famous rivals.
At London Heathrow, EVA uses Terminal 2 and passengers access a Star Alliance partner lounge rather than an EVA facility, the same position as United and ANA.
Baggage Allowance
| Checked baggage | 2 bags, 32kg each (piece concept) |
| Cabin baggage | 2 pieces plus a personal item |
| Status bonus | Additional allowance by tier |
| Priority tags | Included |
Infinity MileageLands and Star Alliance
EVA's programme is Infinity MileageLands, with tiers Silver, Gold and Diamond. Gold and above deliver Star Alliance Gold.
For UK travellers:
- Avios do not work. EVA is Star Alliance. Avios from BA and Qatar cannot be redeemed.
- Star Alliance miles do — United MileagePlus, Singapore KrisFlyer, Lufthansa Miles & More and ANA miles can all book Royal Laurel.
- Award availability is often good, precisely because fewer people target EVA than Singapore or ANA. If you hold Star Alliance miles, EVA is worth checking.
- Amex transfers into partner Star programmes are the practical UK earning route.
Routes from the UK
EVA serves London Heathrow Terminal 2 with daily flights to Taipei Taoyuan. Flight time is around thirteen to fourteen hours.
From Taipei the network covers East and Southeast Asia well — Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Bali — plus transpacific services to North America.
EVA is a strong option for UK travellers heading to Taiwan itself, and competitive for onward Asian connections where a quieter hub is preferable to Hong Kong or Bangkok.
The network is narrower than Cathay's or Singapore's, and EVA does not serve Australia from Taipei in the way the Gulf carriers do from their hubs.
EVA vs Cathay vs Singapore
| Feature | EVA | Cathay | Singapore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closing door | No | Aria only | No |
| Aisle access, all seats | Always | Always | Not on 787-10 |
| Pyjamas | Yes | No | ULH only |
| Amenity kit | Rimowa | Good | Lalique (ULH) |
| Hub congestion | Lowest | Moderate | Moderate |
| Hub lounges | Very good | Best in world | Excellent |
| Avios | No | Yes | No |
| Network breadth | Narrower | Broad | Broad |
Short version: Cathay wins on lounges and Avios, Singapore on seat width and dining. EVA wins on pyjamas, the Rimowa kit, hub calm and its safety record. If Taiwan is your destination, or if you hold Star Alliance miles and want good award availability, EVA is a strong and underrated choice.
How to Book EVA Air
UK–Taipei fares are cheapest in the winter months outside Chinese New Year, and again in the autumn shoulder. Avoid Chinese New Year entirely — demand across the region spikes and fares roughly double.
Book 4 to 7 months ahead. EVA discounts less aggressively than Etihad but fares do move.
One specific point: if your itinerary includes an onward Asian sector, check whether it is Royal Laurel or Premium Laurel. The regional product is materially different and the booking engine does not always make it obvious.
As a consolidator we hold negotiated EVA fares, confirm Royal Laurel on every sector in writing, and can compare EVA against Cathay and Singapore on the same dates.
